The Cape to Nantucket

Yesterday was a bit of a transition day driving from Boston to Cape Cod in preparation for our next journey to Nantucket and Martha’s vineyard. We checked in to the Captain Farris House B&B and had a nice relaxing day that allowed for a bit of resting. I did a little shopping in Hyannis and then we went out for Thai food at Bangkok Kitchen. Yummy Paid Thai and Rangoon Wontons.
We had an 11:00 a.m. ferry with a 10:00 a.m. taxi pickup. Knowing that the B&B included breakfast (duh) I was already thinking about what they would serve. I am not a breakfast eater. I like brunch at about noon. Perfect brunch for me would be bacon, eggs and hash browns. I am not a sweets breakfast fan. I don’t like French toast, pancakes, waffles, muffins, donuts or pastries. But, inevitably, that is what is served. Sure enough, the minute I opened the door from our room, I could smell the cloyingly sweet smell. Oh good grief, what could it be?! Jeez, it’s banana-stuffed French toast. I’m sure to many of you this would sound delicious. To me, it was awful.

What do I do? I have already observed the cook/owner asking a young couple if they enjoyed the French toast, oh yes, it was delicious. I cannot fake my way through this. I cannot eat it. I tell Carl that I need to let the them know I don’t want the French toast, I’m not a big breakfast eater (I’m not) and I just want the sausage (not to mention they already served us yogurt and fresh berries), plus, I hate wasting food. I am sitting there imagining pretending to eat this meal, and not hurt anyone’s feelings. So, Carl let’s the them know that I just want the sausage. The disappointment is palpable. They then ask if I want cold cereal? Oatmeal? English muffin? No, I just want sausage and coffee. Thank you very much. Ok, this is why I like hotels. I pick what I want when I want it with No judgment. For what we had to pay for this one night, I should be able to pick my own breakfast. Why does it have to be a one size fits all? (For the record, Carl loved the breakfast.)

We made it to Nantucket about noon and dropped our bags at the Jared Coffin House and set out for lunch. Our room was ready after lunch and we settled in and took a nap. How lovely. We headed out for some shopping, but there is something seriously wrong with a pair of seersucker shorts costing $119. That’s wrong for two reasons.

We noticed a widows walk on top of our Inn and inquired if we could go up there (for photos of course). Although they said it’s not open to the public, they would have someone take us up. That someone happened to be Winston from Jamaica who had a brand new baby boy named Sharma. We wound up several flights of very narrow stairs and were well rewarded with 360-degree views.

We finished the evening by heading out to Corazon del Mar for tapas and margaritas. Oh yes, and the chili pepper infused shot of tequila the bartender lined up for all of us at the bar. Oh my!! Good food and we met a captain of a private 112-foot yacht, along with some of his crew. They’ve worked for the family who owns the yacht for years. Wow, what a different lifestyle.
